Building a HIPAA-Compliant Genomics Platform with Emedgene
Start Your Cloud JourneyBackground
Emedgene is dedicated to unlocking genomic insights for health organizations worldwide through data-driven AI solutions designed for scalable genomic diagnostics and discovery. By partnering with leading healthcare and life sciences institutions, Emedgene empowers precision medicine initiatives, supports high-throughput diagnostics, and accelerates the pace of research and innovation.
The Challenge
As a genomics intelligence platform, Emedgene relies heavily on high-performance data search and analytics. To support this, the team initially deployed a self-managed Elasticsearch cluster across several cloud-based virtual machines.
However, as the company scaled rapidly, reliability and scalability became critical. Emedgene chose to migrate to AWS, leveraging its managed Elasticsearch service to reduce operational overhead and access a broad range of AWS tools—enabling multi-region deployment closer to healthcare providers.
Yet, the migration presented challenges. Establishing a secure, compliant, and best-practice-aligned AWS environment—while meeting stringent HIPAA requirements—proved complex. Emedgene needed to balance the urgency of migration with the necessity of security, performance, and long-term compliance.
Our Solution
Emedgene engaged MyOps not only for its proven expertise in Elasticsearch but also for its robust track record in AWS adoption—enabled through the MyOps Cloud Adoption Solution.
The MyOps Cloud Adoption Solution is a templated, open-source cloud onboarding solution built with HashiCorp Terraform, designed to accelerate AWS setup while adhering to security best practices. It provided Emedgene with:
A secure, compliant AWS account structure
Full audit capabilities
Hardened network security and protection from external access
Beyond migrating the Elasticsearch workload to AWS, MyOps helped modernize the architecture by integrating additional AWS services—including Amazon ECS and Amazon ECS on Fargate—to support varied workloads.
MyOps also provided ongoing advisory support, helping Emedgene optimize their infrastructure through:
Strategic use of spot instances
Adoption of cost-effective storage solutions
These efforts led to an estimated 20% reduction in operating costs, significantly improving infrastructure efficiency.
The Result
With the migration complete, Emedgene now runs its Elasticsearch-based capabilities on AWS’s managed services, free from the burdens of infrastructure management.
Thanks to the MyOps Cloud Adoption Solution, the company established a HIPAA-compliant AWS foundation that supports continuous innovation.
Today, Emedgene is empowered to build and scale new features confidently—extending their global reach and improving patient care worldwide.
